My experience as well. A while back I used to hit the estate sales, flea markets, neighborhood garage sales, etc. and for the cost of the gas alone I could have purchased the few nice tubes I found from a dealer. Always seems like you stumble on the best stuff when you're not even looking...
My only other great tube steal was about 12 years ago when I came across an Ebay auction for 50 NOS 5-star CIFTE 12AU7's. The seller was either a bozo or just careless -- he had left the first digit off and simply listed the auction as "2AU7 French" with no reserve. Don't even remember how I came across it but I popped in a $25 bid and won it as I was the only bidder, likely due to nobody else even seeing it. Pretty darn nice $0.25 tubes. :)
