It seems like a fantasy to me. I have never found many tubes in an antiques or second hand shop. I did see one 'magic eye' tube untested for $15 so I passed. I am still waiting for a tube gravy train to come through.
I have even put tubesup for sale at my family's antique fair and garage sale- advertised in the local paper.
I got one guy who wanted a 6L6, sorry fresh out and a 12AT7- I wasn't there at that moment and spoke to him by phone. I have quite a few `12AT7s. however Being the worlds worst salesman, I asked what kind of tone he wanted. The answer was essentially warm. I had British tubes but stupidly, told him that there were some good deals on Fleatray including some better than average tubes,- Brimar Trustee 6060s. I have 3 or so pairs but paid as much and that he should just buy them. He thanked me 'for the lesson.
