Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
I am going to the replace the tubes and may find out the answer to this question soon. But I thought that I would ask, especially in case this is not just a burned out tube.
My system is complex, active crossover, etc. I heard a loud scratchy sound and powered the amps off, etc. within seconds, earlier today. Now, one channel is out. I have ruled out my sources. I swapped left and right out of the Conrad Johnson PV 10 BL and the other channel was dead, so I know that problem (assuming only 1 problem), is not downstream of the pre. The remaining channel does not sound quite normal or as loud as normal. Also, when I turn up the gain on the pre-amp,the "dead" channel does have some music come through. I bought the pre-amp used w/ unknown tube hours maybe more than 10 years ago. I once replaced the tubes w/ some recommended by Upscale Audio, but liked the original CJ tubes better and put them back in, as I recall. So, the tubes are quite old and have many hours. But, I am curious as to whether a bad tube in this pre can affect the other channel. In other words, I wonder how much the 2 tubes share such as heater currents, etc. where one burning out can affect the other. I will go replace both and hope that I have my stereo back and have not damaged anything.
