I feel this thread pretty much and succinctly describes the 5751/12AX7 sub question. They are NOT direct substitutions for one another, but might be considered near subs.
I like the 5751. Perhaps primarily, it's VERY quiet/low noise. Works great for an input tube. Of course I might say this since most of my experience with is with Conrad-Johnson gear where they used this tube extensively for a long time, and primarily as an input tube in their amplifiers. I never tried to swap a 12AX7 for a 5751 in these amps, though there were a few people who did and claimed to like the 12AX7 better.
