Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Anybody else loving GE greyplates?

Right situation is right. I've had "situations" where a GE 5751, 12AX7, or 6550A was just right thing - that is, the thing I enjoyed best; the system synergy was there for me.

There are many GE tubes I've liked, sometimes been surprised by. And I know folks who find them to be THE tube for some applications. Generally, I do like just about any of the long plate GE 12AX7s and 12AU7s. I've even found some good synergy with the early short plate 12AU7s. They seem to sound different from the later ones. Many of the 5814s can do a lovely job in a 12AU7 socket. The 3-mica gray plate O-getter GE 5751 from the early 1960s has often done the trick.

And generally, I would tend to agree with Mechans about mid and treble ranges of most of the GE tubes I've used. The 3-mica black or gray plate Sylvania 5751s are hard to beat in most applications for their overall sonic character.

All of this is why you want to have a selection of tubes on hand as your palette to experiment with how different tubes work with you system and your ears. Which is why as good as transistor gear can be, I am not likely ever to be tubeless.
