Need help with KT-88 that tests good but plays bad

Yesterday I heard the dreadful, loud tearing cloth sound from my right mono block, a push-pull Mullard 5-20 circuit from diyaudio.com (see link).

I played another set of tubes, EL-34s for an hour no issues. I put the same Gold Lion KT-88s back in and after 5 minutes, bad noise. I barely touched the right hand tube of the pair after it quieted, bad noise. Switched the tubes left and right, now the noise recurred from the same tube, again after a cool down and a few minutes of operation and the onboard meter pegged to the 100 mA limit.

So I again tested the "bad" tube in my ancient Eico 666 with the KT-88 parameters not on the roll but from the Alabama site. It test the same as before, Good.

A head scratcher?
