The PCC88 may be an "OK" substitute for the ECC88/6DJ8. OTOH, the PCC189 is, except for its heater, identical to the E189CC/6ES8, which is a NON-LINEAR variable μ type.

The 6ES8 should be, as originally intended, employed in RF circuitry, with AGC. The type should not be used in HIFI equipment.

The OP's wrath is, most definitely, not misplaced. Double fraud has been committed. :>((
