OK, I get it...

I'm not sure who views them that way ("one of the best sounding amplifiers"), but I understand what you mean now. I agree there are a few older mono pieces from the '50s and '60s that contain excellent transformers. My thoughts on those are generally not to rebuild, but to strip out the iron and use it to construct new amplifiers that meet modern requirements for hi-fi. That's usually more work than reusing the original chassis, but in the end, I think it's worthwhile.
