I have not tried the new Chinese small signal tubes like the 6sn7. There are so many good vintage 6sn7s around at reasonable prices why bother?
Output tubes are a different issue. As I have stated here before, I think many of the new Chinese manufactured KT88s and 6ca7s(el34) are outstanding in terms of sound quality.
I have tried the PisVane KT88 black bottles and new KT88 grey bottles and the Treasure 6ca7. They are all outstanding and easily competitive with the best NOS output tubes I have used. Still not quite sure of longevity, but I am closing in on 1000 hours on my grey glass KT88 with no problems and still rock steady bias.
I recently had my GEC KT66 grey glass tubes in the Rogue Stereo 90 for the holidays. My favorite output tube! Two weeks ago took them out and put the grey glass PisVanes back in. The sound actually got better to my ears! Maybe my Acoustats need the extra power, but the grey glass KT88 are my new favorite tube in the Rogue. Better than GEC KT66. Better than EI KT90.
They are expensive no doubt. But if they keep working they are worth it!
I will be trying the new Treasure KT120 from Grant Fidelity soon. I can use the extra power. I do not find the Tung Sol KT120 to sound as good as the other tubes mentioned.
I got my PisVane KT88s from Partsconnexion.
Enjoy the roll!
