RE: Some questions about Chinese tubes

I have about 100 6SN7 tubes squirreled away over the years. Except for TungSol, I have a good sampling of most vintage types ('40s-'60s Sylvania, RCA and Raytheon, KenRads) plus the Soviet MELZ. I have had them all in use from time to time, mainly in an AtmaSphere MP3 linestage. They really all sound just fine, with small differences that allow choice to come down one's personal equipment and "taste". I can easily live with all of them, even the less respected side getter GE. The Chinese military 6N8P are not in a league of their own, but they as good as all the rest. They just happen to make my 6C33C-E SET amps sound best as drivers upstream from 6SL7 input tubes (where the pricey red base 5691 sounds best). I paid $16 apiece for "best matched sections/pairs", which I see DIY HiFi no longer offers. The $8 per tube they still sell is a no brainer to try. They are the same tubes as I bought, and you can inquire about matching. This vendor has always responded to my questions. No matter how many 6SN7s I will eventually retest and sell to thin the herd, I will keep my 20 or so Chinese military 6N8Ps. Their performance to cost is simply unmatched.
