Before my CAV 50 had to go into the closet due to space limitation I used 1 JJ KT77 and 1 Golden Lion KT77 per side, since you can bias each tube individually.
Otherwise I prefer VT 231 Ken-Rad, 12AX7 Telefunken smooth plate.
Never bothered with a decent 12AU7 since I did not use the pre out.
