The Mullard el34 FX1 has a larger base (shown above) than the later tubes, including the FX2.

With the later tubes the base is only slightly larger than the glass (shown below).





The posters problem is the larger base of the FX1 won't fit through the hole in the chassis to allow the pins to reach down to the circuit board mounted tube sockets below.
