Well, I haven't much experience to impart. I've only used these tubes as phase inverter and reverb positions. As they come, I found they performed similarly. By this I mean, they had more in common with each other than a GE, RCA or Mullard.
Plus, it may be difficult to say tube which we're really talking about. A quick search turns up about 3-4 different Sylvania-made 12AT7 tubes in JAN and USAF boxes, both with and without tripe mica, and both with and without black plates.
I would suggest attacking this by year of production in order to refine your search. Thankfully, most 12AT7 types are fairly priced - collecting a few should be easy-peas.
