Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

You mention Amperex Medical, probably a good tube fitting tight specs but may not sound as good as another Amperex !2AU7 which I like for its frequency extension tone and mostly it's sound stage, called a 7316. It was also developed for a different purpose early computing devices.
Make sure it is a Heerlen Holland made Amperex they have a right triangle acid etch. I have seen many counterfeits for sale these days.
I would also emphasize Sondek's comment on finding the tube positions that have the greatest influence on the sound. You don't want to waste hundreds of dollars worth of tubes in irrelevant sockets. As an example the Cary SLP-05 uses a pair of 6SN7s to amplify it's headphone amp, which many may not use. I collect 6SN7s and could easily put $200-300 worth of NOS gems in those positions. The rest of gear is fantastic, but you may want to experiment with a tube power amp (LOL but seriously). Good Luck
