RE: 12AX7 Replacement

The post by Palustris below is correct. A circuit properly designed for a given tube will only work properly with the same tube. You can even cause damage (or shorten the life) of a tube by switching. For instance, the 12AX7 is designed for a max plate current of 2.5ma. Sticking one in a circuit designed for, say a 12AU7, which may be designed with 10 or 20ma of plate current is not advisable. Stay with the proper tube.
