Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: what 2 tubes will replace a 6BM8?

Believe me, I know the compulsion to use the tubes on hand! However, I think you owe it to yourself to buy some 6BM8 for this project. These things, in one way, are like EL84/6BQ5 - You have to really look hard to find some that sound bad. They are easy to drive, sound great, and are tough.

Also, these things are cheap and plentiful.

At one time, the original incarnation of Svetlana published a 6BM8 schematic for a PP with fixed bias and an SE cathode biased, presumably to sell more tubes. I built both (though I didn't use any Svetlana 6BM8!) Very happy with how both turned out.

I currently have a bunch of Oz-made Radiotron 6BM8 as well as some Westinghouse branded Yugo 6BM8, likely made by Ei. I estimate I have 7,000+ hours on a pair of the Yugos in the SE amp. Over time, the getter flash has migrated all over, so that the envelopes are nearly uniform mirrors. But they keep playing and sound great. Some of the Oz tubes may have even more hours on them, but that amp in in my wife's office. She will let me know when they stop working...
