5751 and 12AY7 tubes will usually "work" properly with a given "intended for 12AX7" circuit and might even yield fine high fidelity results. Many of our peers have tried these two types with successful lower gain along with very high fidelity results. Even with some phono circuits, 5751s might sound fine and some hifi folks have reported good results using 12AY7s with "their systems." They are, after all, listening to the music and hoping for high fidelity results...
