I'm trying to establish if the octal socket depth varies or what the tolerance is. Had some problems with a pair of 6L6GC Sylvania tall bottles that had these fitted (see link below) - one kept going cold and had to be pushed down to make contact. I'm assuming that because of the thickness of the key replacement that the contacts in the socket were gripping the tapered part of the pin.

Is this a hit or miss adventure to repair a broken keyway?
