Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

12AU7

The experienced fellows and builders I know who really know audio design howl with laughter at the mention that 12AU7 is a 'bad' tube. So many great classic, proven amplifier designs used 12AU7 as the first or second tube. I fell for that myth a few years back and changed the 4 12AU7s in my good Heathkit W5Ms to 6CG7 - what a mistake. No improvement and a little lost. And I only use my best tubes - have a great Hickok tester. It's that dichotomy of actual sound vs. measurement. Who cares if some tube measures nonlinear? If it sounds good, it is good. I have great British 12AU7-ECC82 and they sound great in all circuits.
