RE: Like a Mullard CV4004 but less forward?

I think I feel what you mean by the forwardness. I find I generally get that quality out of most Philips ECC83 types.

I find that forwardness can sometimes be a function of gain. Have you considered using a 5751 instead? I've seen a little math worked out - you get less gain, a bit of a smoother presentation, and a bit of an extension of the highs. Check this link out...

Also, which new production tubes have you tried? There's a wide variety of tubes available these days. There should be one out there to fit your need. Check the the other link out below. There's a ton of interesting info there :)
