I am really surprised by these replies. The output tubes, in your case the KT-88s. The small signal tubes or preamp tubes all have an influence, but the rubber that hits the road, are the KT-88s. The little guys are fun to roll I have about 100 next to me right for all of one roll-able tube right now and more are stored away.
Of the 2 pre amp tubes you mentioned the 12AX7 has the most gain, thus I would say that one after the power tubes.
