The cast iron weight is prolly affecting the EM field generated by the transformers. Maybe, absorbing some of this field and EM energy generated by the trannies. Kinda like an "EM sink" version of a heat sink for heat.
Plus, the weight changes the audio resonance frequencies of the unit. More weight usually lowers the resonance frequency, perhaps to below audible range. That's maybe why you need a certain amount of weight to work. Do you have any non-metal weights? Like maybe cement block or heavy wood? Be interesting if this is solely a weight/resonance or an EM field issue. Or both.
