I had also found a pair and tried them in the RCA Hybrid Classic phonostage, modified by Eli. I normally use Sovtek 12AX7-LPS or Mullard new reissue 12AX7s. The older RCA gray plate was detailed, somewhat laid back, and easy to listen to. Like you wrote about the 5963s, laid back but not rolled off on either end. Not quite as much gain as the newer tubes, probably due to age. Very nice tubes if you can find NOS.
