That is right. Reference tracks or albums/CD's.
I find that it is easier to discern the attributes of a tube (or gear, for that matter) by living with the previous tube for a week or two and then the new tube for a like time frame - using the same source and record, CD etc.
The best overall sound is the aim. If I find myself getting into the music and tapping my foot, that is a good thing.
