In Reply to: Question about 6p3se / 6n3ce tubes for sale on Ebay?? posted by artemus on September 18, 2015 at 13:54:55:
I just broke one of the 6P3S-E in my VTA ST-70 (Even Bob calls it a VTA ST-70!)
I emailed Jim McShane, hoping he had an extra laying around, even one of those tilted bottle ones he advertised. He didn't.
I checked ebay, and found matched pairs advertised, so that shouldn't be an issue, although, as you said, the VTA amp has individual bias pots for each tube.
I wrote Jim again, asking what his failure rate was like with those tubes. Here's what he wrote me this afternoon:
"A good number of them were gassy until they were burned in. Those tubes would have been a real problem for an amp! Once burned in they were fine. So yes, I did have some [failures] and would have had more without my ability to run them in."
End quote.
I'm not encouraged by what Jim said, but I think I'm going to have to take my chances. I tried my used (original) Mullard EL-34 and Gold Lion KT-77 in my VTA ST-70 and wasn't really happy with the sound until I put the 6P3S-E tubes (recommended by Michael Samra) in it.
Good luck. I hope you find some good ones. I hope we both do!
