RE: Power Tube Failure

Thanks for your reply.

So far, this isn't a recurring problem: it's the first time I've had a tube flash/arc. I vaguely recall that what happened six years ago was that when I moved to Europe, after having the amplifier serviced to switch from 115 to 230 V, I put back the tubes and one just wouldn't work. I presumed it had been damaged during the move --- it did spend weeks at sea. I discovered today it was originally in the same socket where another tube failed today, so there's that. But I discovered that because I put it in another socket and it wouldn't work. Whatever broke it, now the problem is with that tube.

Dirty socket connections are a clear possibility. I noticed today that the top of my tubes is no longer shiny---an obvious difference from the tubes I used in the US, which are still shiny. The socket could be oxidized too. I'll try searching the archives. But isn't there a risk that cleaning reduces the tension even further? I'm afraid I don't have the ability to re-tension.

The manual doesn't mention any need for a matched quad. Each tube has its own bias.

Thank you very much again!
