Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Sophia 6SN7

I have, and strongly recommend, the Modwright/Oppo 105. So far, I've experimented with three different pairs of 6SN7 variants. They sorted themselves out this way:

1. NOS General Electric 6SN7GTB. A good friend who designed and built my 845 SET monoblocks said these were the best-sounding of all the 6SN7 types he had tried and that someone on Ebay was currently offering a batch. I bought a pair (don't remember any specifics, sorry) and they certainly sounded better to me than the other two pairs.

2. Sylvania JAN CHS 6SN7WGT, datsing from 1958. Not bad at all. My first bit of tube rolling after listening to the stock ElectroHarmonix 6SN7s that came with the unit.

3. Shuguang Treasure CV181-Z, a ModWright recommended (at the time) upgrade. Great LOOKING tubes, they didn't come all that close sonically to the GEs and Sylvanias IMHO.

There are obviously a ton of 6SN7s I haven't tried, but for now I'm sticking with the GEs. I just cycled the other pairs through my system and verified the order in which I have placed them. Obviously this is in my system and YMMV.
