RE: Raytheon 6SN7GTB black plates ?

Let me, for the sake of argument, say that there are applications where the roundness of the GTB and it's lack of distinct character can be an advantage in a cascade of amplified signal. It will never win over any who worship clear distinct and pure signal but it's like saying that a supporting chorus member will never ascend to the soloists position. Perhaps not, but that doesn't mean they sing out of tune.
Your advice is sensible and grounded for the OP to take heed of. I just thought I would throw that in for "philosophical" reasons. I sure wish I hadn't ended up with so many Raytheons myself and they are almost all the Military or GT versions.

My own advice to the OP is.... save your money for special 6SN7s, they are fairly easy to identify. They tend to cost more. If you have good working tubes don't be in a rush to buy. Watch the sales, read the forums and listen to as many tubes as possible. When ready, then buy what you know you want, not what others tell you to want, even if it's a GTB LOL!
