I built various kinds of 26 preamps from 2008 to 2011 - my circuit is on the recent Tubes DIY thread. They were better than any other DHTs I'd found up to then, maybe excepting the 10Y. I was never quite satisfied with the high treble - I found it rather soft. The 26 is a euphonic tube - lovely on vocals. The 10Y is more dynamic.
At this point I bought some 4P1Ls and that was the end for all other DHTs - and believe me I have a huge stash of various kinds from 71A, 112A, 101A, 10Y etc. to the usual 2a3, 300b outputs. The 4P1L was clean, dynamic and had great treble. No reason to use anything else, so I picked up over a hundred when they were cheap. Yes, they're microphonic, but OK if you feed them a good 2-3v input, reduce the filament voltage (starved filament) and mount them in a massive chassis (4mm aluminium, minimum). You will be rewarded with something very special.
Here's the circuit - it's actually my whole amp but you can use just the first stage if you want a line unit.
