I wouldn't even consider buying a high dollar DVM for limited or occasional use. A high sensitivity analog multimeter (used) is much less expensive and will allow you to see circuit problems and characteristics that are much more difficult to detect and analyze with digital. One of the old Micronta multimeters would be perfect for this. Useful models include the 22-049, 22-214, 22-204A and 22-210. There were also megohm input impedance FET meters like the 22-208 and 22-220.
