A pair of 'lowly' SE84Bs in the late 90s turned me on to the first watt philosophy. A simply magical sounding pair of amplifiers (see link), if you have reasonable efficiency (say above 90dB) and don't listen at head banging levels. Seriously, you will learn a lot about recordings listening this way. Decware also makes a some amps which use EL34s, but I find the EL84 sound super fast and airy...addictive.
