Why aren't 12AT7s as loved as the other 12A_7 tubes.

Tried between 8 to 10 12AT7s in a Hovland HP-100, modified by replacing the Hovland capacitors with Duelund CAST PIOs, Audyn True Coppers and V-Cap CUTFs. Of all, including the 8162 and the 7062 variants, the best for this pre-amp seems to be the G.E.C. A2900/CV6091 triple mica double bar square getter. The sound just seemed to "lock in," allowing me to work on other areas.

The tube did not appear to alter the frequency response, except that the reproduced note became more powerful, as in the note became more palpable rather than thin. Some would call it a warmer sound, but it is not, as the frequency response if anything appeared to get more linear, allowing for the "locking in." Also, it seemed to allow for the reproduction of low-level information, making the sound intimate as well. So I guess you can find love that is powerful, as well as intimate.
