Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Why aren't 12AT7s as loved as the other 12A_7 tubes.

The 'T7 has its own linearity issues. However, in well chosen situations, its high gm and high μ can be "marvelous".

The type responds very well to CCS loading. The 'T7 triode is linear, when CCS loaded and the cathode bias resistor is unbypassed.

Another great use for the 'T7 triode is in PP amps. Jim McShane pointed out quite some time ago that the 12AT7's distortion spectrum combines with the distortion spectrum of PP "finals" to yield an exquisite net spectrum.

The 12AT7 rates to be poor in a SE amp. One size does NOT fit all. "Horses for courses!" :>D
