I am late to the discussion despite where this comment ends up. Sometimes a good preamp can mean a world of difference, I love mine. The amount of tme that any piece of electronics is used to "burn in" can have very dramatic effects on it sound. Finally I am an inveterate tube roller who really thinks and believes the choice of tube, the time it is given to burn in, is critical.
If you go back to a preamp controlled system with selected special tubes and have some patience, lets say a month of moderate use, I think you will be happy once again with your stereo.
