Agreed 100%; I could not have put it better myself.
I have a Cayin headphone amp using one EL84 per channel; after some significant parts upgrades it sounds excellent. I've tried Siemens and Genalex Gold Lion EL84's, both good; but I find old NOS Mullards usefully better. And I'd say the Mullards are not in the least edgy.
To the OP: look to other valves or choice of parts (caps especially) to find the edgy sound; it isn't the Mullards!
