RE: EL-84 or EL-34 kit project

Eli is right in asking about your speakers. The specs on your speakers determine the power amp output that you need. I am guessing that a push pull EL84 amp of about 20watts/channel will be inadequate. But a push pull parallel with 4 output tubes per channel will be around 30 watts a side. EICO made a kit called the HF30 which is a monoblock amp and also an HF32 which is an integrated mono amp. Sometimes you can get them for a good price on the bay.
Going with the EL34 type of amp and if you are a "handy" type of guy I recommend getting a Dynaco ST70 or EICO HF87 or HF89 to rebuild. The EICO's have superior output transformers and a slightly better circuit while the Dynaco has so many kits and available parts and support that you should have no trouble getting all the parts you need for a rebuild. Both of those models have great resale value so you would really not be risking much if you decide to resell. Conrad Johnson and Quicksilver also make EL34 powered amps but prices and parts and service is not as good. good luck, Dak
