RE: what do you do when the tubes WILL NOT FIT IN THE SOCKET

Are the tube pins straight enough? I've had this problem with some Chinese octal base tubes having splayed pins.

I suppose you might be able to take something like a new, clean set of round nose pliers, insert the tip(s) into the contact and try to open it up. Maybe something along these lines, preferably nothing that will leave scars on the contact surface.
