RE: Orange VT-1000

Well, on the surface, it looks like a very convenient device, but if you're serious about testing your tubes, I'm not sure it's the best.

For one, I can't find any obvious data about the testing parameters. I find nothing about the voltage that's actually applied to the tubes. On account of that missing info, we can't say for sure how accurate and real-world-applicable the testing really is.

Now, if you score a good deal on the Orange, then it's like getting a Sencore tester or something similar from the era. I'd hedge the bet that the Orange runs voltages at around 100-150V, which is OK for testing small-signal tubes like 12AX7's and the like. However, for power tubes, it's not sufficient. You won't get accurate results...

For newer testers, I'd suggest the Maxi Matcher. It runs the B+ up to 400V. The higher voltages will provide far more accurate/reliable results. Also, it should reveal faults lower voltages would not able to tease out of the tube.

This company also makes a heck of a preamp tube tester. But, it's over 1000 clams. It's a little much and probably beyond the scope of our discussion here.

So, it all depends on what you want to do. If it's more preamp tubes you're looking to test, the Orange (at a sale price, not regular) would be a fair option. If you're testing mainly power tubes and you don't mind the price difference, I would go for a Maxi Matcher.

May your tubes be lively, warm, and long-lasting. Holy be thy heater.
