According to some reading I have done the GE 5 layer plates were actually developed by TI (Texas Instruments) and accomplished by explosion welding.

Most black plates are carbonized, IIRC.

And while cooling is paramount, it is interesting to look at the 6SN7 family. Early models had the plates parallel to each other. Later models had the plates staggered, and then even later models had the "triangular" plates, actually rectangular but mounted at an angle to each other, presumably for better dissipation.

Also the use of cooling fins on grid rods and having the rods made of that copper colored material all were supposed to increase cooling capacity. Some tubes even have the screen support rods with that material.
