Maybe it was g3...

...in any case, what ever it was it was tied to the anode.

If you look at the electrode structure of a 6J7/6C6/6C5, there's lots of space available for all those electrodes. I doubt a true 6J5/6SN7 structure could accommodate all the added material w/o the invention of the frame grid which I'm pretty sure came after the intro of these tubes.
