Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |

Before I ever read Joe's Tube Lore I was onto the 5751 as a great sounding tube, bettering all but the best 12ax7's. I have now accumulated a ridiculous amount of 5751s... RCA, GE (5 stars and JAN), Sylvania, CBS, Raytheon. Black plates, triple micas, you name it.
The best of the bunch in my amp, and still by a LONGSHOT, is the less heralded, 2 mica, grey plate 1960's and 70's GE JAN 5751. Green silkscreen, sometimes labeled JAN 5751, other times JG-5751. Same tube, though as far as I can tell.
The very best of the type that I own is labeled JAN, though. And I picked it up for $10. And it sounds better than my Mullards, Amperexs, etc that cost 10 times as much.
Incredible tube. I am grabbing them up as fast as I can find them when they come along at a reasonable price.
Happy listening!
Andrew
