Is the 5963 truly compatible with a slot designed for a 12AU7? Both from i) a heater-current limits / safety viewpoint and ii) a circuit performance view point.
If your power amp is out of warranty (and isn't a stage / music / PA amp), have you considered ditching the 12AU7s and rejigging the circuit for a much lower distortion noval twin-triode?
The 12AU7 family has quite high distortion and IMO only work acceptably well as cathode-followers.
If your amp has the heater current reserves to cope, a 6C/FQ7 would be far better than a 13D5 as would a 'super 6DJ8' even a 6H30.
The phase-splitter role is important IMO&E and if it's a twin-triode slot a single CCS per tube in LTPair mode is likely to improve the sound - and splitter balance - significantly.
More? As the circuit's inherent distortion will also be a lot lower you can use much less NFB around the splitter / overall loop NFB. Gaining gain some additional stability in overload. None of which can be bad things.
In my case I replaced a 12AX7 in LTP with a FET CCS'd 6CG7 in LTP and was able to lower total NFB.
