RE: Your favorite NEW tube(s)... not NOS

Mel,

Yes, I think so. I'd purchased some JJ 6922's a couple of three years ago, the steel pin ones. The sound was very good, but within a few weeks one had a hissy fit. There was a fair bit of bad press going around at that time about lack of QC at JJ, so I wrote them off, and steered clear of JJ altogether for a time. I finally relented and gave some of their premium 12 volt tubes a try and was very happy with them. Based on success with the 12v tubes and some rumblings here about improved quality, I bit the bullet and bought some of the premium 6922's. Been nearly a month now in the phono of my CAT SL1 and they not only sound great, but are dead quiet. Was the extra money for the premium worth it? Very probably. So happy with them I don't really care. They're a still bargain compared to the GL's even with the premium. My SL1 uses six 6922's. Right now I only have the JJ's in the phono input spot, but am giving serious thought to replacing the Amperex and Teles I have in other positions an using all JJ's.

Just to add that the premium JJ 12v tubes I mentioned get you much more than gold pins for the price premium. You also get larger, long-plates and a spiral-wound heater.
