RE: 6922 tube recommendations or findings for Conrad Johnson Classic 2SE

I have some pretty strong feelings on this. That preamp has 22dB of gain. Now typically your preamp is ATTENUATING (reducing) gain...not adding it.

It's like this: Most amps need maybe 1 volt of signal to make they play as loud as they are capable (clipping). Your CD player probably has 2 volts or more coming out of it.

So you are in essence reducing gain by 6dB. Now you have all this gain to deal with, 6dB on top of 22dB, and what usually happens is the tube will go noisy, microphonic, or both. The Conrad Johnson ET3SE has a larger problem, as it has 27dB of gain.

Sadly, the only tube we will warranty into your preamp is the 6H23-EB which is what we call the Type 3. We also have a very nice Philips PCC88 that people have used and in fact CJ bought some from us at one point.

There is another answer to this for the guys that have these preamps if they want to call me.
