Im surprised you find that the KT77 "blows". It's a beam tetrode just like the 6L6GC/KT66 and true 6CA7. I find that a true 77 sounds a lot like a 6CA7 and in some respects there's a resemblence to a 6550. Or to put it another way, I find beam tetrodes have a family sound just as the pentodes have their sound. It's not so much related to what was marketed as a sub for whatever. Just my opinion of course.
