The 6G5 employs a remote cutoff triode to drive the target and so takes a considerably larger voltage to close the eye compared to the 6E5 which uses a sharp cutoff triode. 6U5 was esp useful as a radio tuning indicator where the AVC voltage would be used to drive it. The remote cutoff characteristic gave the 6U5 much greater signal strength range compared to the 6E5.
