RE: 12AX7 TELES GOLD PINS\GREY PINS

True Tele gold in 12AX7 types as previously noted were ECC803s. Internal construction was different from a regular 12Ax7. They were frame grid designs and looked similar to a 6DJ8. Modern tubes from JJ and China have similar construction but I have not dissassembled them to check construction.

The frame grid construction technique has two stiff bars bridging the top and bottom grid posts. This further insures the stability of the grid wire tensioning.

NOTE: for a while there was a notorious con man who was plating regular smooth plate Teles with gold and marketing them as a special run of Teles.

Although I knew of his con I elected to buy one tube, just to examine (better than an Ebay photo). The date codes do not correspond with the runs of the ECC803S. They were probably selected smooth plates, as they did have the diamond logo on the tube base.

Sylvania Gold Brand, had 12AX7's in a true factory offering. Many were sold at Radio Shack as their Life Time guaranteed tube, although later Radio Shack gold pinned AX7's, I believe were Japanese made ( not sure as my sample is quite dilapidated and worn). There are also of course the Genelex Gold Lion B759. I believe most of these were selected from the I61 short plate Mullard series

It should be noted that all 9 tube pis are basically an alloy steel of some sort. The gold is plated over. The slight increase in resistance I believe adds a bit of warmth to the base line tube. Just my opinion....
