The tubed preamp suggestion has merit. More than 1 good sounding rig uses tubed preamplification and SS power amplification.

The Merlins' impedance curve is not horrendous, but something with a respectable damping factor is needed. Applying Paul Joppa's 102 dB. rule to that 87 dB. number indicates that upwards of 30 WPC is needed.

Do you want honesty or do you want euphony? A refurbed H/K Cit. 5 will give you the power and damping necessary, along with honesty.
