Output tubes will start to sound dull and flat even if they still hold bias. Tubes typically sound best at between 60-70% of their rated output. As an output tube ages, you will have to readjust the bias to get it to hold bias. This means it will burn hotter. This is where it starts to degrade and needs to be replaced.
