I have tried a bunch of different type of 7199 replacements even though I have 7199s. I have Telefunken 6u8, Tung-sol 6u8, Sonotone 6u8 and GE. I love the sound of the 6u8/6U8A better as an alternative. I have also tried GE, Zenith, Westinghouse and Lindal 6GH8A. My favorites are as such: GE and Tung-sol 6u8, and GE and Lindal 6GH8A. The 6U8 has a very balanced sound, however the 6gh8a is a in your face attack gainy little sucker that is great. I hope that this helps.
